morning at the salon

....Morning at Nolan's salon, that is! I'm sure Aunt Moey, the master of all hair-dos, will be proud of this one!

Here it is....his masterpiece....complete with bows and everything! The even more amazing thing is that Macy actually sat still long enough for the artist to do his work! This is what I woke up to in the morning....

what's going on in your neck of the woods?

Randomness at the Smith household:

Tonight at dinner Nolan said, "Mom, did you know I always wanted to stink?" followed by, "...So the girls wouldn't always want to chase me!" I told him I really hope he stinks when he's 16 so the girls would stay away from him then!
.
Trip to dentist for the kids this week...I'm happy to report they're both in the no-cavity club! Yeah! Our family pocket-book really is especially happy about that!
.
All of my kitchen cabinets are currently door-less and everything is unloaded onto the kitchen table and in other random parts of the kitchen. read: Chaos! But, the good news is we'll have freshly painted cabinets hopefully by the first part of next week at the latest! Wahoo!

Sidenote: Jer has certainly earned the title Husband of the Year this time with the kitchen remodel. And the good news is that he is still talking to me! Even after such a long list of honey-do's! Bonus! Here he is working on the new floor with our "Tim the Tool Man" neighbor. Thanks, Steve!

golf for christmas

I asked Nolan what he thought he might like to get for his dad for Christmas - to which he responded promptly, "A Golf Course!"

Okay, right....we'll get right on that. That is exactly the budget I had in mind. :-)

What a thoughtful son.

luck o' the irish

Well, Nat, here you go....a million pictures of Ireland, well, almost. Long story short, we changed our plans from Paris to Dublin, our best-bet European destination for stand-by passengers. I have to say, one of the best parts of the trip was flying Business Elite Class from the US to Dublin and back. It was amazing to have a five-course meal complete with a hot fudge ice cream sundae on the airplane! I've only ever seen that kind of thing in the movies. Not trying to boast, just incredibly grateful for Jeremy's job. :)

One of the craziest things about Ireland for me is that it's so cloudy most of the time that you can't even tell where the sun is in the sky. It's like a time warp of some strange phenomenon to not be able to tell about what time it is by looking for the sun. And it was like that all day long. You'll notice the gray skies in almost every one of these pics.

City of Dublin. Smaller than I expected - mostly 4-5 story buildings through the entire city. Very walkable and nice city. I think we only saw one vagrant our entire trip.

My next front door....Do you think it will work for my house?

Driving on the left side of the road from the right side of the car was adventurous. You'll notice the posted speed limit 100 km/hr (~62 mph) on this crazy winding road, with narrow lanes and less than one foot of shoulder, next to a stone wall! Our car was about the size of a VW golf, and it even felt too big on a few occasions with cars zooming past the opposite direction. I think I only yelled out loud once, though!

Then the road suddenly ends at a "T" like this. Advice for next time - pay for the GPS unit.

Blarney Castle. Now Jeremy and I officially have the gift of eloquent speech (although I have yet to see the proof in myself), after kissing the Blarney Stone. You will see a small opening above Jer's head. This is where the stone is, and it involves leaning out over a ledge, supported by the worker man (who probably makes more than I do in a day - just in tips!)

It's a bit of an awkward position, to say the least, especially for shorties like me.

This is the front side of the Blarney Castle, Jeremy's favorite stop on the way. If you study this picture carefully, you can play, "Where's Jeremy?"
The visitor's center for the Cliffs of Moher (you might remember them as the "Cliffs of Insanity"). I love how green the building is in this protected environment - built into the hillside. Seriously, the pictures don't do this incredible place justice. This was one of my absolute favorite stops.

The wind blows like crazy here. It was supporting almost my entire body weight leaning into it. Hence the layered hoods. Reality check comes when you see the sign posted for potential suiciders to call the Samaritans to talk. Ugh.

My other favorite stop...taking my brother and his companion out to dinner. (Don't worry, we emailed the mission president for permission before we left.)
And this was his reaction to being the first one to find out he is going to be an uncle again. It was fun to tell him our news in person and see him a couple months early. Can't wait for him to come home in December!!!

The Best Wife in the World...

With no offense intended to all those wonderful wives in the "blogosphere" I must state for the record that I have the best wife of all time. This is Jeremy for those of you who can't tell and I thought I would just tell you a little about why I have the best wife. She is a great mother, even though sometimes she wouldn't agree with me. She always goes out of her way to help others even if it may be a bit of a hassle. She keeps me on the straight and narrow. The caketaker though is the fact that she has put up with me for 12 years! Thanks honey, I love you, happy anniversary!

pah-ree

Well, folks, it is time for me to face my ultimate travel anxiety (anxieties, let's be honest. I really wish it were singular! Once again, those of you who know me best, know exactly what I mean here). Jeremy and I are planning a trip to Paris! Eeeeek!

Flying stand-by, we may or may not actually make it, but if not Paris, we'll probably still try for Europe something.

So, here is my request for you....I need your advice. If you had only 3-4 days to see Paris, what would be at the top of your list? Plan B: Barcelona? London? Rome? Any recommendations?

Happy Birthday

to our fearless, fun,
dirt-lovin', wormin catchin',
girly-girl tomboy

Macy!

Macy didn't want any help climbing to the top

and had a blast on the way down!

Did I mention this was a canyon stream and f r e e z i n g cold!!!
Seriously, my legs were numb from wading.
She didn't want to ever get out! What a tough-ee.

We love you, Macy!

sunscreen anyone?

Seems that Macy had an abundance of sunscreen today....Yep I found it painted all over her bedroom wall and door. You know, the waterproof spray-mist 50 spf kind. Hmmm. Not the easiest thing to clean off - oh, and did I mention, with all that scrubbing it started dissolving the paint? Well, on the bright side, at least it's on the back side of her door! I suppose it could be worse!

And besides, she was pretty darn cute apologizing during my cleaning rant, "Me weel-wee (really) weel-wee, weel-wee sorry!" over and over again. Definitely a girl through and through. Can't you just hear the drama!?

first day of kindergarten (belated)

Nolan started kindergarten in July, and although I'm a bit late getting these posted, I'm patting myself on the back that I actually posted them before he starts first grade! So, if you'll forgive me for a moment of self congratulatoriness - Good job, Karla! (BTW, if that word isn't in the dictionary, I think it certainly should be!)

I didn't even get his picture with his eyes open!

We were so lucky that Jer had the day off, too, so he was around to make everyone happy for such a potentially-traumatic event for us.
(Those of you who know us best, know all about the anxiety levels at our house.)

This was a big day for me...first child off to kindergarten, and all.
I'm so proud of him, and he is doing so well - making huge strides every day.

To tell you the truth, I was quite sick to my stomach that first day!....Probably more than Nolan! But we all made it! And school has been a great adventure so far!

day at the lake

Headed to the lake with PawPaw and our friends. Had a great time!

Nolan with Macy and Macy's future husband Colby. :-)

Macy is fearless! She doesn't need any coaxing.

Jer and his dad. Check out this air!

Jer and Cameron....love this series...

Check out this crazy air!

Thanks again for the fun, PawPaw!

Life - in the eyes of a five-year-old:

Babies turn into kids.
Kids turn into teenagers.
Teenagers turn into adults.
Adults turn into old people.
And old people turn into dead people!

revenge

Nolan filled me in on all the shcoop about "revenge". You're gonna love this one.

Nolan:
Revenge is when someone hits you and then you hit him back.
Me:
Oh, that doesn't sound very nice, does it?
Nolan:
No.
Me:
What do you think you should do?
Nolan:
You should hit him back and then say, "I'm sorry!"
